Hérault Remiremont
Hérault Remiremont ─── An Original Character made for Roleplay in Final Fantasy XIV. Non-WoL, Largely Canon Compliant. A green-eyed and roguish Shroudborn Elezen. Soldier, bartender, friend, enjoyer of puns, and chaser of novelty. written by Raja (he/they, 29+)

❝ You cannot change fate. However, you can rise to meet it, if you so choose. - Princess Mononoke ❞

Hérault is a man addicted to living life to the fullest. You'll find him eager to converse, easy to flatter, and always with a glint of excitement in his viridian gaze. And yet, he is not always loud and vivacious; sometimes the best way to live life on a razor's edge is to be silent and leave some things vague. He prefers to leave his past as such an implication, instead focusing on the second chances he's been afforded. Witty, wordy, and welcoming, this Shroudborn Elezen is eager to dish out some puns, engage in shenanigans, and maybe even make you a special drink suited to your tastes. Caught between the alluring perils of a dangerous life and an aspiration to be an upstanding citizen, Hérault has plenty to offer for a variety of characters.

Guidelines
001 IC =/= OOC In Character is not Out of Character. Please respect a healthy IC/OOC divide; it will make for a better experience for both of us. I am not Hérault. He is not me. All art has some of the artist in them, but being able to maintain the divide will, in my opinion, elevate our craft. 002 Communication I am a strong believer in the merits of OOC conversation and communication. If we wish to engage with sensitive topics, if we wish to collaboratively story-tell, please communicate with me as to your thoughts and feelings. I am an anti-spoiler radical. I will communicate my character spoilers if necessary. You don't have to do the same but I do expect healthy communication. 003 Respect I respect you as a writer with agency. This is an assumption and a trust. I trust you to be decent. I trust you to respect me and others. I trust you to handle situations sensitively. I trust you not to metagame without permission, and I trust you are in this for the love of the craft. Please prioritize your comfort. I can't read your mind.
004 Maturity I will only engage with writers and characters above the age of 21. If this does not apply to you, apologies but I am not the writer for you. I am very comfortable handling mature topics in a roleplay medium, whether that be sexual in nature or other serious themes. However, I will not engage with mature themes without communication and a certain degree of trust. My willingness will vary based on topic due to my own history. 005 Decency I am exposed to enough homophobia, racism, sexism, transphobia orientalism, ableism, and other such bigotry already. I'm not likely to be in the mood to engage with such content unless we have rapport. 006 Medium I am open to writing on Discord if we have roleplayed in-game at least once. My replies will vary in length and speed, but will typically be multi paragraph replies. Hérault is also pretty wordy, so that will impact the results. You'll find me typing with double quotes or /em for Hérault's dialogue, and ((like this)) for out of character. Replies across multiple messages will include a >> or a (1/X) to indicate.
007 Canon I try to remain as close to canon-compliant as possible while telling the story I want to tell. I am a themes-first writer and I interact with the game's canon as such also. Hérault is not a Warrior of Light. He probably is not going to engage very well with most WoL characters. Please do try to stay as grounded as possible in the game's lore, because it helps us share a vocabulary. That being said, if you want to diverge from canon, I've been roleplaying for so long that I can probably roll with the punches. If you're wildly canon divergent, though, I do expect there to be a reason why. If your character has aethersight or a similar sense/power, especially relating to death, please let me know. I have certain important thematic boundaries with him that must be respected. 008 ERP If I am writing an ERP scene, I expect it to be in character. That means that likely our characters have some level of chemistry and are both consenting, along with the in-character consequences of such activity. Don't be weird. Hérault is available to engage in sensual activity with characters identifying as masculine (presuming they get along).

Dossier

❝ If the loss of one tree does not mark the end of a forest, then where lies the boundary between a forest and the lack thereof? ❞
Chiaroscuro of the Liminal Hérault is a walking bundle of contrasts, a man working very hard at bettering himself...neglecting the fact that in many ways he already was plenty good! Hérault's key themes include the flaws inherent to common storytelling conceptions of redemption arcs, the importance of death and growth, and the interplay between strong morals and the ambiguities of life. He is not a perfect man, nor does he does not think of himself as a good man...yet. However, his past struggles have given him confidence and a quiet strength to seek what he desires. He tends to admire people with drive, ambition, and a fire that fuels them.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
Bright green eyes
Unruly hair
SCENT Honey and fresh bread AETHER Hérault's aether teems with excessive vitality, and gives the sensation of freshly peeled bark. This may be attractive to characters with voidsent themes. Please obtain my consent OOC before engaging on this level.
At first impression: One might see Hérault with a mischievous grin or an arched eyebrow. His sparkling emerald eyes typically shine with delight upon meeting someone new or hearing something novel. He may seem eager, a bit chaotic, and something of a troublemaker.
A second look may reveal a man with strong opinions, a deep interest in learning, a good listener, and a thorough evaluator. His penchant for wordplay and eloquence is carefully practiced, but his genuine willingness to jump in wholeheartedly to an endeavor—dangerous or not—is an instinct he's never been without.
Hérault cares a surprising amount about tradition and history, given his lighthearted attitude and decidedly un-scholarly demeanor. He also enjoys going for runs in the Shroud, singing deliberately badly, a variety of vegetables, and eating (but not catching—far too boring) fish.
❝ May your travels be as true as the Fury's spear and lead you to a hearth as warm as the Matron's love. ❞

Biography

A Past He Isn't Proud Of. Hérault was born in the South Shroud to a small Duskwight community outside the Quarrymill. He grew up an unruly child, though he did take quite well to his parents' efforts to keep alive what little Gelmorran culture remained. Despite being a poor student, he did greatly enjoy the tales of history long gone.During his adolescence, he fell in with the "wrong crowd," in no small part driven by the necessity of making a living under Gridania's restrictive approach to his community. Hérault joined the Azure Antelope poaching gang. It was there he met his mentor and close friend Aysha Kireç. The Thanalanian woman taught him bladecraft, and despite it all is still a role model for him today. She made a family, a home, and a means of survival for their little group. Hérault quickly became one of their best, a proficient hunter and tracker. He found love by the name of her lieutenant, Alain Grelevent. He felt he had found what he'd do for the rest of his life. And then Aysha died, under mysterious circumstances that he knows not the truth of to this day.Without her, the small gang quickly floundered, their fate uncertain. Her uncle, a distant relative and merchant from Ul'dah, made the group an offer. A job of unparalleled difficulty...and in exchange he would secure them permanent employment and wealth in Ul'dah itself. They deliberated, and ended up taking the offer. The job, of course, went wrong. It never would have gone right.
A Today He Is Growing Into. Hérault's last memory before he awoke was seeing his companions die. He knows naught of what happened in between, though he has his own beliefs as to what transpired. Nevertheless, he awoke in the care of the Stillglade Fane, a seeming anomaly. The vague impression of a phenomenon not seen since the Calamity was etched upon his being...was he a wildling? Not exactly. He was something else. Attuned to the Shroud and the Elementals, but decidedly not a Hearer, he had become a vessel, a tool, an instrument. He had glimpsed the deepest of despairs, the end of life, and his home against which he had so deeply transgressed saw fit to drag him back to atone for his sins. And so, he resolved to do just that. Without a care as to whether his condition and his new mindset was just, he threw himself into becoming a better person. Perhaps, even, he was unable to do anything else.Thankfully, the Seedseers agreed and placed him among the Quiver as an adjutant as his new skills revealed themselves. With a keen sense for sources of woodsin, he has quickly become an invaluable asset to his division. He did not leave behind his mischievous nature, though, leaving the fact he has yet to be disciplined despite the critical eye of so many (whether it be due to prejudice, his odd status, or simply being victim to one of his harmless pranks) a true marvel. In addition to his efforts to work with the military to right his past wrongs, Hérault has embarked on his journey of self-improvement by making an effort to learn something new every opportunity he gets. Something of a daredevil, he's quickly grown to keep himself as busy as possible—never one to let silence dominate a conversation unnecessarily. And yet, part of him wonders if he's simply distracting himself from accepting the truth of what he experienced and truly interrogating if he's really on the right path now...was he actually wrong so long ago about how his community was treated?

Hooks
001 Gridanian Military: Hérault is a member of the Gods' Quiver, despite not actually being an Archer. This odd arrangement is somewhat notable, and characters familiar with Gridania's military may have heard of him. Alternatively, maybe you ran into him during his official capacities, whether that be at formal military events or out in the Shroud. Please note: Hérault is not a Wood Wailer. 002 Bartender: Maybe you met Hérault at the bar at one of the venues he works at, or needed him to fill in as a substitute bartender somewhere. 003 The Fane (OOC discussion required): Hérault has connections to the Fane due to his odd situation. If your character is tied to them or is a Hearer, you may have heard of him. 004 Voidsent (OOC discussion required): Hérault's aether is particularly tasty to voidsent. While a normal person in his predicament (assuming such a thing was possible) would avoid characters with ties to the void, so long as you're subtle, Hérault may be drawn to the danger like a moth to the flame instead of vice versa. 005 Reformed Criminal (OOC discussion required): Hérault was a poacher. He is no longer. However, it may well be that you've heard of him or knew him in his past.
